Dont break items when at 0 durability

I wanted to make a ranged wepon that only has 20 durrability and doesn't use ammo, and when it breaks it gives you an unusable verison of the wepon taht can be repaired. Can someone help

I might be wrong but this will probably be only possible in the 2020.4 update, as it states in the changelog.
"Added "on item broken" global procedure trigger".

You could use that procedure to give yourself a different version of the item.
