Is there a disadvantage for using Mcreator?
Sun, 08/16/2020 - 01:20 (edited)

I always wanted to learn how to make mods for minecraft, and MCreator was always there but since it isn't that popular, I thought it would have lots of disadvantages by using it.

You don't need to write the code, that makes it easier and quicker, so using it would be the best option instead of manually writing everything, right? But still it isn't as popular as it would be if there weren't any disadvantages, so I don't know, should I learn how to actually write the code or should I always stick to MCreator?

also are MCreator updates "not rare"? I hope it doesn't take 6 months to be able to make mods for 1.16.2 in MCreator is what I mean, just a secondary question but If answered I would be glad. :)

Everything depends on the type of mods you want to make. For example, if you want to make a mod like BlockBuster or the ReplayMod, yes you will not be able to make it. However, most of the mods can be made with MCreator.

Its not harder with mcreator. It makes you be able to auto generate blocks that would normally take awhile to add. Also mcreator is titled as the best mod maker ever which I agree with. If you were making the mod without using mcreator it would take way longer and also you would need to type code for awhile just for one block so I think its worth making mods using mcreator until I get better at java. Also you can learn how to mod using mcreator since if you click on a mod element it can show you the code to make the mod element.

I always wanted to learn how to make mods for minecraft, and MCreator was always there but since it isn't that popular, I thought it would have lots of disadvantages by using it.

Most people in the forge community will just tell you that MCreator sucks without giving reasons, so this is my personal opinion:
Pros:

Saves time. A lot of time.

- Makes modding easier for people who don't know Java. Most of the time this is good for content creators who don't have the time or will to learn to program.

- Packed with in-app tips and a very comprehensive wiki.

Cons:

- It generates code that is quite bad compared to Java mods due to it being closed-system and Java mods offering more flexibility for optimization. This is a major reason why the mainstream modding community dislikes MCreator.

- Bigger mods lag the game.

- Is still kinda limited compared to Java(can't make GUI progress bars, no chest like animations [TERs], no custom particles, can't make custom damage sources, limited ranged item support, etc.) But recently the severity of this issue has become a lot better. The 3 issue tracker tickets that were the most upvoted are all implemented(Enchantments, Conditions, and Item Inventory), and with the open sourcing of MCreator soon to come, I strongly believe that MCreator will soon become even more powerful and can truely become an alternative for modding with Java.

- Makes modding easier for people who don't know Java, which ALSO allows children to post their ruby ores and ruby zombie mod made in 5 minutes. This also affects MCreator's reputation devastatingly, which is also the reason why most of the main modding community hates MCreator: They don't hate MCreator, they hate unoriginal MCreator mods. I am not saying that MCreator mods are all bad. There are in fact a lot of great mods that their creators put a lot of time and effort in(Check https://mcreator.net/motw for some of them), but if you look at the general mod quality of this website and compare it to a more main-stream modding website you would clearly see the difference between the two websites.

It's 2022 now and it just doesn't stop getting better! it was not that great in previous years but seriously the number of new things added every update is just amazing. There will once come a time (maybe this year itself) that mcreator will be no less capable than coding.
