Custom Recipe tutorial may be outdated

As an exercise, I attempted to make a custom crafting block. After several attempts to prevent Minecraft from crashing upon inserting any items, The block finally works; however, pressing the button which is supposed to initiate the recipe does not do anything. As nothing is happening, I don't know what could have gone wrong. Perhaps the way the blocks of code have changed has made the tutorial obsolete or I missed a bit.
