Custom mob spawns inside block with my custom item

Hey, so I am making a custom mob with a custom spawn egg thing and it keeps spawning inside the block I place it on. I've seen hundreds of forums with the same issue and their solution was to make the y coordinate that the mob spawned on +1 but that doesn't work on the newer versions as you can't put a "+", any help?
