How can I steal the standard shield model?

I want to make some extremely simple shields out of some materials. They are basically the same shield with different color and durability.
The thing is that I want them to look identical to the standard shield, is it possible to get the model from the game file? I tried to import "json model" from the models folder but it didn't do anything, so I guess that's not the way.
If that's not possible, what alternative would you recommend?
Thanks.

you can export a model identical to the shield one creating a skin on blockbench, selecting shield instead of player and then converting it to a java block/item before exporting it
