[Fabric] Brewing recipe help?

I'm making a custom item (not potion, as I'd like to use a custom texture) that I'd like to be brewed by using a brewing stand. It would use an item like charcoal for example. While I have no problem creating the item, effect, and the recipe, when I build and run it to test, I can't even put the charcoal in the brewing stand. Is there a way around this using the fabric generator plugin, or am I cursed to use a regular crafting recipe? Or, additionally, am I going to be forced to make them into a potion? 

I just need the mod to work for a small time server, so in the end if I have to take these measures I won't be mad, just want to see if someone else has figured out a fix for this that doesn't require me ripping my hair out trying to do it myself, haha.

Additionally, is there any way to make crafting recipes secret from the crafting book using the fabric generator?
