Leave Remainder Block In Crafting Grid

Title says it all, instead of a item, in a recipe I want the remainder of the item to be a block, like if I have a peanut butter jar (which is a block) when I craft it with something I want it to keep a empty jar remainder in the crafting recipe. I know you can do it with items but I want to do it contained within that one block if possible, even with code.
