Exporting mod just exports vanilla minecraft launcher.

ok, so i go to export, click to export the mod for distrubution, and all it downloads is a file that opens the VANILLA minecraft launcher. ive had this mod done for 10+ days but can't get it released becuase exporting mods just doesn't make sense. and if i got to file and hit export as zip, the zip file it exports is over 2 gigabites in size, even if i don't even add any mod elements. HELP. i want to show my mods that a put hours of work into to the community. and ive been trying for weeks... but i just can't figure it out.
