custom crafting only accepting dirt

Hello, ive been trying to create a custom enchanting table and im using this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=750viR4mMlE 

I have everything set up pretty much the same as he does, but when I go to make recipes i can only use dirt. I have to have it in every input slot. I have tried other items, other blocks, but only dirt returns with a competed recipe. Im just completely at a loss, im not sure why dirt is working, and im not sure why nothing else is.
