First make the block you want to have as a chest, then make a GUI. Select 'GUI with slots' and add an inventory. Then add slots and finish it. On the screen your on press the block trigger thing (forgot the name), scroll down to the chest block and select it.

@#1.1 On the same screen your on when you exit the GUI editing, there's a selector thingy called 'Bind this GUI to block (optional):'. On the selector it says '<none>'. Click it and scroll down to press the chest block you created.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure the block you created has inventory enabled. When you tick it make sure to not change any other inventory settings.
