Hostile spider mobs

I am trying to make a hostile spider mob, but nothing I do seems to work. I even tested to see if it would attack me at night or in a dark place and it still doesn't attack. I set it to monster and set it to mob, I even set it to "Spider" AI. It still doesn't attack me. Also, it moves too fast even at the default speed of 0.25. I tried lowering the speed, but it still moves quickly. Can someone help me with this?

I am using version 1.7.3 (because I wanted to make mods for 1.7.10)
