Is it possible to turn vanilla items into food items?

I'm still new with MCreator, so i haven't been able to find anything like this. Is it at all possible to take an existing Minecraft item (in this case Netherwart) and just edit it so that it's both edible and provides nutrition like other foods, without needing to convert it into a new item first?

i know i can make a "cooked netherwart" item as a food and then just put netherwart into a furnace to cook it, but i'd really like the ability to just eat Netherwart right off the harvest, like you can with a raw Potato or Carrot.

Can anyone help me with this?

i'll try that out then, thank you!

If anyone knows a way to make it actually count as food then i'd still love to hear it, but hopefully this will work in the meantime.
