Am I safe to use existing Minecraft textures as Reference/Alter them to make new textures?

I don't want to get in trouble for this later, so I want to know if I am safe to do this.

Examples: Making Granite, Diorite, and Andesite Bricks using the Granite, Diorite, and Andesite textures, or Creating a new Totem using the pre-existing Totem texture.
