First time modder, want to learn how to add a timed progress board for crafting

Hey so I've been thinking about how when crafting, players can create entire sets of armor in seconds, which seems kinda improbable (ik minecraft isnt the most realistic game but hear me out). I want to do some thing where theres a progress bar like in furnaces, but for crafting certain things and also only when the player is in the crafting menu (maybe add some sort of hammer minigame or something so that players dont get bored). I want to have it also where when a blacksmith villager is within a certain radius, they could also help the crafting process, though thats an extra thing that doesnt need to happen.

The only problem is, ive never modded before. I dont know what im doing. This seems like something that would be decently simple, though even then i dont know where to start.

The first item i want to have a crafting time to it is the iron breastplate, so we could use that as a foundation for me learning.
