Make sword slash effect with particles

Hi! I want to create an mod that adds many swords with a variety of abilities. One of which is to make a sort of slash effect using particles. What i  am aiming for is when i left click the sword in air, particles in form of an Cross-slash appear. One idea i had to do it, was to throw an item (for example an diamond) in front of the player, and then add particles to that item with commands. The command part is easy, but to throw the items in a cross shape is seemingly dificult. Any help would be much appreciated!
