Changing the result of lava and water mixing.

I am very new to modding, but have a little experience in Java from college classes (im not completely helpless). I am trying to change the result of water and lava casting from cobblestone to a custom block I've created. Can anyone give me a quick walkthrough of how I would go about doing that?
