How to use tick produces now? How to force blocks to tick?

Since one of the updates I have no idea how to use tick procedures now.
 

I wanted to make a multi block door. You click at lock block with a key and all the door block start to crack and break, for a nice effect. When I try to do that, lock changes to cracked but cracks dont spread. Can someone tell me what should I do? or theres just an check box option to force them to tick and Im jsut blind?
