How do I change the item texture of a vanilla block?

I just wanted to replace an existing item's texture but I could only find the option to ADD new items so I created a new block to which I applied my item texture. This block exists with the sole purpose of being replaced by the vanilla block (campfire) when it's added to the world, but that's such an unintuitive method.
