About the plugin

This plugin adds a new theme called "CE Redesign" which overhauls nearly everything about MCreator's theme. The only elements it does not change are either hard coded or essential colours in the code editor, which have not been touched (e.g. the class view in the editor, as well as the text colours.)

The main principles I used here are:

  • Modern design
  • Sleek appearance
  • High contrast
  • Complimenting colours
  • Dark mode appearance

The reason I made this theme in the first place is because even though MCreator's base design is done well it falls into the category of developer grey. It's an aesthetic that does fit the theme of developing Minecraft mods well, and it does look modern, but it can get boring easily. Which, once again, is not the fault of MCreator, but rather grey design in general. With this theme, I gave it a new tint colour that is very vibrant, but not too bright. A tint of crimson red chosen specifically due to its appearance and readability. All except from one shade have enough of a contrast so that it should pop out on all elements.

The other part is the usage of dark grey to black for backgrounds and elements. Modern monitors and screens are great with displaying darker colours, so I thought I'd make use of it. The colours are carefully selected to appear like different types of black shades with blue tint, which compliments the red. The differences in brightness are big enough so that all elements have a visual separation, but not too big to look flat. The bright colours follow a similar approach. There are two shades of blueish light gray which work as the white in this theme. The reason dark themes should usually not use pure white is because it can be stressful for the eyes and burn itself into the retina. Still, they are fairly bright so that they have enough contrast to the red, and sometimes act as different shades in icons.

The third part consists of the icons specifically. Most of them have gotten a workover that only moves away from the original where it needs to to fit this theme's style. For instance, all icons for 3D objects now have an isometric 3D look to them like in-game. Element icons are also thicker and only consist of one colour which makes them look stylish and work well at very small sizes. And lastly, the red tint is also now worked into a fair amount of icons to group everything more together.

Below is a list of screenshots showcasing the different pages that were redesigned:

I hope you find this theme interesting and that you have fun using it.

I think my favourite two details to design were the two types of model icons in the list selection. The one where the file type is printed on the actual model, and the one for built-in models. The latter is a translation of "out of the box" into visual language.
