How to make multiple random numbers to choose from

I am making the radio from fallout 4 in mcreator, I made it so when you hit a button it will set local variable string to random number between 1 and 3, then under neath are three if then statements, they both say if string local variable = to 1 then it plays a song, I tried it in game and it dosent work
