Why don't you add towers with a mini-boss that gives you a type of gem? When you get all the gems you can craft a special item that you can aply it on a sword that's very difficult to craft. Or maybee with the gems you can open a portal to a dimension with enormous dungeons and enemys that you have to fight to get more gems to open more portals to fight a final boss too powerfull that you'll need to collect all of the relic you find on your way so it's more fun and difficult to finish the game makeing it a very cool experience.
-Magic wand (shoots laser, cooldown 30s)
-Magic Head(instead of helmet) (More Magic Power, 10% restistance against magic)
-Magician with Magic wand (drops: 25% gem)
gem-> craft better magic wand/upgrade
Magican in magic towers -> one chest with loot
