So I would like to make an upgraded chest for my mod. I made the texture in MCSkin3D. I just want to know how to get the model for the block.

Use some block model maker that can make json models.
For example opl's model creator or mrcrayfish's model creator.
What about Techne?
use blockbench is much better http://blockbench.net/ for 3D
