how to set an entity for a command

hello i'm trying to do a command then when executed changes the players nbt but im not sure if how to get it so you can type a players name for it to change that players data

ex /gamemode 1 [playername] would change that player into creative while /gamemode 1 will change the person who typed it into creative.
