How do i get player tick working?

so ive been working on this mod for some time now and i want to add effects to my armor (this is a fabric mod if this helps in anyway) and i keep getting the same problem where tick updates (world tick, entity And player) just doesnt work at all i do everything the tutorials say but it just doesnt work any tips on how to get it working?
