Trident Animations

Is there a way to add a trident animation? Mcreator currently has a spear animation but this animation is kinda bad compared to the vanilla one and doesn't render the item in hand correclty. After looking at the code i've noticed some other animations that are hidden from the main menu aswell as an option for custom animations but how do these work?
