Not Sure How to go about fixing what appears to be a transparency/translucency issue with my block?

when I set it to cutout for the render type this is what I get

but when I set it to translucent....the bounding box goes completely invisible....

this is how the properties are set up

any input in helping me figure out how to correct  this issue would be greatly appreciated.
