Need Help with Portals

I am currently struggling with creating a working portal, every time I want to make a custom igniter Item (using the built in portal feature) it won't let me make a crafting recipe or edit unique features about it. However when I create a custom igniter item (using the Item creation feature) it won't allow me to use it for making portals. Lastly when I try to use a pre-existing item from Minecraft itself, it makes it into a separate item and will not let me use the regular flint and steel. If someone could help me that would be nice.
