So I made a food trough and I need help

So, I'm making a prehistoric mod called PrehistoriCraft and I need a way to feed/water the animals which prompted me to make them a food trough. like what farmers uses to feed/water their animals. the problem is that I have no idea on where to start for putting food into the trough and how to get my Dire Wolf to eat from it.
