Block base Log

I'm trying to make a block that acts like a log. I found from a different article that blocks can be made to act like leaves. The issue is when i load in, the leave blocks register that there are no logs nearby, so they decay away.Is there a way that I can so this without editing the JSON file. Until a workaround or an update fixes this, I'm not messing with the leaves.
