I don't know how to make my mob lay eggs like chickens

I am working on a mod and there is a mob where I want you to leave items like chicken that leaves eggs, but I don't know how to do it, I need help please

It's definitely a procedure involving spawning gems on the ground underneath them, however I am not entirely sure how to make it so they don't do it all the time.
