Blockbench modeling 2D planes without overlapping faces

In the image below, the fin and halo are both clipping through themselves. They are simply cubes with a height of 0. The tail of this mob is created the same way, yet there is no clipping issue. Is there a way to add 2D planes in blockbench or is there a way to fix these cubes to stop them from overlapping? Thanks in advance.

Well you can put that with height = 1, and in the texture only cover one face, then duplicate this and put it for the other side.
