Displaying Player Cosmetics

For my mod, I want the player to be able to equip certain cosmetic items. This could be achieved by making custom armor and having the player wear it, but I still want the player to be able to equip armor while using the cosmetics. Basically, how could i render custom "armor" models onto the player without them wearing it?
