Mcreator will not close with the x button or file>close mcreator, these buttons have no affect and I can just continue as normal. The only way to close mcreator is with the task manager but this will delete the whole workspace and there will be nothing when I come back to it.

You can't close MCreator if it is setting up the workspace.
I know I later solved this problem because I found out it needed administrator piglets
