how do you make a block in a structure place another block?

How do you make a block in a structure that place another block next to it? I have watched this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFFDcw3WOZw and it doesn't work, nothing happens where the block is supposed to spawn. Is there a new way to create this procedure?
