how can I make the player not take damage after an explosion created by a tool

I'm trying to make a pickaxe create an explosion when right-clicking a block. the thing is, the damage is just as I want it to be but I don't want the user dying after using it 2 or 3 times. can somebody help with the procedure necessary for this to happen??

A quick and cheesy way to do this is to give the player absorption on bullet impact which would negate a lot of the damage or all depending on how you calibrate it.
