How do you make an entity's sound volume change based on direction/distance

How do you make an entity's sound volume change based on direction/distance

I'm currently making a mod that adds many different types of mobs, but I can never tell the direction or distance of the entity because the sound just plays over the player. How can I change this?

Example: I added a fly entity and set it's ambient sound as "hostile", but it's ambient sound sounds like it's right next to me at all times.
