Locking player health to a mob health

I'm trying to make a mod where there is a single pet and the player's health is always set to the pet's health. This makes it so that the player cannot get damaged or regenerate unless the pet is damaged/fed. But when I try setting the pet's health to a variable and setting the player's health to that variable, it doesn't work. Please help.
