How to make underground tunnels?

I am trying to figure out how to make tunnels that appear undeground (2x2 to be more specific), but could not find any tutorial or guide on how to do that, I thought at first of trying to make it a structure but it just never worked and sometimes even appeared way above ground.

Any ideas?
