I have a log that is 4x4 pixels wide, I don't want it to turn the grass beneath it into dirt. Is there a way to prevent that, or am I just stuck with it?

Maybe you can change the transperancy. In the visuals of the block change, Texture Transperancy type: "CUTOUT". It may work as you want.
