Custom item texture is greyed out

I created custom item models using extruded textures, but for some obscure reason, item models made using extruded textures are greyed out in the hotbar and inventory, as if there was a semi transparent black overlay on top of them, but only in the hotbar and inventory. In the player hands and on the ground it looks normal
