How can I prevent the plant from being placed on top of itself?

Hi everyone. I'm basically new to modding and here it goes my very first issue. 
I'm creating a custom plant, and my goal is to make impossible for the player to place the same plant at y + 1. 
I've spent a lot of time thinking unsuccessfully about it, may I get some advices, please?
