How to change the crafting recipe of vanilla items?

Im making a mod for a specific island survival map, and I was wondering if It was possible to change the crafting recipe for vanilla items. Like I want to make it so the only way to craft a iron sword would be to create the blade and hilt separately, and then combine the two. I know how to make a custom crafting recipe, but now how to change an already existing one.
