Make an NPC Follower

I want to create a unique NPC follower that can be spawned using a combination of blocks and items. Not a villager but look like a player and can be a follower, like a wolf or cat would.
I've been able to build it like a mob that would spawn like a zombie but its not what I'm looking for.
Any help for this would be appreciated.
