"Some mod elements didn't compile properly" when attempting to update mod to a newer minecraft version

I'm trying to update my old 1.16.5 mods to 1.17.1, but when I try this, it says something about mod elements not compiling properly, and that it can be fixed by regenerating the code, however, that doesn't work.
