Help: New Kind of Furnace

I'm trying to make a furnace that can take two items and smelt them into one item, like iron and gold into a new item. I watched the furnace tutorial and understand the basics for needing to make my own furnace, but I don't know how I can get a furnace to smelt two items into one item.
