Creating a Trident (or a throwable weapon).

Hello everyone, let's say I want to create a Trident-like weapon, basically the properties of a Trident, throwable and all that. Now, it is hard, most tutorials I've seen are at least a year old, and they do not fully replicate it as they mainly struggle with the 3D models and making the weapon hit a specific area and get stuck in that state, preserving the angle it landed from, which the Trident does perfectly. So, since I'm no modder and merely experimenting with MCreator, is there a way that we can essentially copy the Trident and its code and make a new weapon with it? Like giving it a new name, texture, 3D model and stats, but it's essentially a new item? If anyone has any experience with manipulating game files, is that a realistic thing? Can we do that?

Thank you very much.

Copying Minecraft code is…

Copying Minecraft code is probably a bad idea from a legal/cooyright perspective. I thought there was a trident tool type, though, so maybe that’s a starting place. You can probably mess with custom code and/or procedures in order to get a but more control.

There is NOT a trident tool…

There is NOT a trident tool type. However, you can make a trident. Copying code from Minecraft is a no-go since it is not open-source.

  1. You have to model the trident item for the hand-held model and a separate model for the entity model when the item is thrown.
  2. Once you have modelled and textured everything, import it all into MCreator
  3. Make your item
    1. Do NOT make a tool, make a normal item, the Item texture and model should be your custom item model/texture that you made in block bench, then give it a custom display item if you want it to be similar to the actual trident that has a separate display item for GUI/Inventory
    2. Properties
      1. Max Stack should be 1
      2. Enchantability should be between 0 and 20, if you want the item to be enchantable
        1. Note making it enchantable with trident enchantments will require some level of coding to actually create a full trident-like item
      3. Durability: Look up the tridents durability, decide where you want it.
      4. Repair Item: Used to repair the item in an anvil
    3. SKIP Use Properties, we will come back to that later
    4. Advanced Properties
      1. Check to enable melee damage
      2. Set your damage and attack speed to your hearts content.
    5. Save the Item, we will come back to edit it later after we make the projectile for it.
  4. Make your Projectile
    1. Select the Item for the required item box (This is why we have to go back to the item later, we need a projectile to make the item ranged, but we need the item to make the projectile)
    2. Projectile Model should be the Entity model you made for it in block bench
    3. Model texture should be the corresponding texture for the entity model
    4. Projectile launch sound should be item.trident.throw
    5. Projectile Power = 2
    6. Default projectile damage is your choice, same with knockback
    7. enable other options as you desire, note, tridents do have gravity so this should be left unchecked
    8. Check the box next to "Remain on the ground after landing"
  5. Add triggers for sounds
    1. on hit block should have a simple procedure that plays the sound of the trident hitting a block
    2. on hit entity should have a simple procedure that plays the sound of the trident hitting an entity
  6. Save your projectile
  7. REOPEN the item and go to Use Properties
    1. Item Animation: Spear Throwing
    2. Item use duration: 72,000 by default
    3. Ranged item properties
      1. Check the box to enable ranged item properties
      2. Projectile to shoot should be the new projectile you made
      3. Check the box that says "Charges power based on time used"

All set, you have made a functional trident

Now, here is the down sides.

  • You are making a mod with no Java/Json coding knowledge, so this is the best you're going to get
  • Making a trident this exact way will make it disappear/despawn the moment it hits an entity because MCreator does not have a piercing setting under projectile element settings, meaning, the projectile just vanishes when it hits an entity
    • There is a work around which makes things a little more complicated, especially when it comes to something such as adding enchantments.

If someone did have some Java coding knowledge, what else could they do to make it closer to the original?

Yeah, I not against custom code and I would like to do something similar (and find a way to store durability and decrease it when it hits a mob)
