Topic category: Help with Minecraft modding (Java Edition)
I am making a custom dimension. And its way taller. I want my dimension to generate taller mountains. I am talking 1000+ blocks tall at most. I have tried for hours. But nothing I changed, seemed to have a meaningful effect. Optimally I want:
- Taller mountains to be able to generate.
- Wider terrain. Wider peak and high areas.
- If possible making peak areas rarer.
I tried crazy high values like 10000, but it still didn't seem to change anything ever. I don't get why. Is this possible? Thanks for helping! This is my code:

At the end of the day there is no set way to make what you want, you would have to come up with it yourself, the generation is based off of a 3d noise pattern, where points on that pattern are converted to blocks and then biomes are painted on top
Simply you want the same overworld noise pattern but scaled up, which makes it higher and wider, increase the ranges between all values and you may end up with a decent result
Yea, exactly. But I have no idea how I can do that. I don't see values that do this, apart from the
size_horizontalandsize_vertical. But these can't be greater than 4. Is it possible to scale that noise pattern up, or overwrite it?Well the 'noise pattern' is just the settings and values that are produced from those dimension settings, you have made the xz and y scale 4 but only for the ore veins
You would also need to increase the height as a whole and then amend all y values. So if it says from y 50 to y 60 you need to change those too.
Try amending these like so and see what happens. I'd probably just mess around with increasing all the y value ranges, make sure the world height is increased
Alight. I played around with the settings you suggested. I used 1008-1216 or -64-1008. Changing -64 to something else caused everything to change into stone. But while the terrain was a lot taller, the highest mountain only reached 201 blocks. I can't increase 1216 further, since that is the building limit. Do you have other suggestions that might help?
Try playing around with all the ranges, if it says from x to y increase the y and decrease the x however possible, mainly y values within final density, also initial density
You could also look into making custom worldgen functions/files to replace some of the vanilla ones, like depth which may achieve what you want
I already tried all values. Most of them are cave related, or cause everything to turn into stone. How could I replace the vanilla worldgen files with my own ones? Like the erosion one?
By creating your own noise functions and density function, you should probably take a look at the minecraft wiki and then potentially also neoforge doc if you wanna dive into it
You don’t replace any just make a few files in your mods worldgen folder and then references them like minecraft:depth you would do mod:custom_density_function, in which you reference your mod:custom_noise etc
The main worldgen density function is based off of the sloped cheese function I think so maybe check that out
Alright. I have copied the slooped_cheese code. And tested that. It did have an effect on my terrain. This is my code:
But again, changing the xz and y parameters didn't do much. The only change was that when they where to high, everything turned into stone again.
What do you mean when everything changed to stone? Like the entire world was a massive cube of stone?
If so then you most likely went outside the range and the noise generates as a constant which then blocks out as all the same
You could also try making a custom base_3d_noise and other noise files, expand the originals
I mean that blocks like dirt and grass changed into stone. The terrain was still normal apart from that. At least the
slooped_cheesefunction doesn't do much. The only thing it seemed to do is like make the terrain pointier. But that could have been random. The thing is that none of the files I change seem to have that much of an effect.I also tried to overwrite the erosion file. Just to see if it had any effect. I created a file called erosion at MCreatorWorkspaces\SolarWorld+\src\main\resources\data\solarworldplus\worldgen\density_function\overworld\. But this function either isn't important, or it doesn't read my file. Because I set the xz scale to 2500 where it was 0.25 before. And that didn't do anything.
Never mind. I found out why changes didn't show up. I had to put it in MCreatorWorkspaces\SolarWorld+\src\main\resources\data\minecraft\worldgen\density_function\overworld\. Now they show up. I was able to make the terrain taller, by overwriting the depth file. But that resulted in a bunch of tall pillars. I want a smooth mountain what is climbable. But all the functions I have looked at, either can't change the xz size. Or simply don't affect this. Do you have any suggestions that might solve this?
You may be able to achieve better smoothing by altering the base_3d_noise or factor, have a look at general perlin noise generation
This https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Custom_world_generation
Will tell you how to make noise files
You could also just try reducing the y scale of your current sloped_cheese until it gets your mountains right, but will inevitably be shorter
Ah. I figured out how that works. Also, I think I will completely remove minecraft's generation. And create my own from scratch. I tried it now. And I got mountains that are 800 blocks tall, and actually climbable, pretty easily. This will work better anyway. Because there where more issues with the generation. Now I have full control. Thank you for pointing me in the direction. You helped me a lot.
You’re welcome
