i want a way to be able to turn a .jar file for a mod into a workpace so i can revive mods that the owners give me permission to revive without having to rebuild the whole mod all over again
I’m afraid you’ll have to convert that to Java or recode it.
what do you mean
So, this would be an incredibly hard thing to do and likely isn’t possible.
Basically, MCreator works by making .mod, json mod element files to store info about your mod elements in MCreator. These .mod.json files are what actually store the contents of a mod element and what MCreator can understand. MCreator then uses the information from these in freemarker templates to make pre-coded Java files for your end mod. Then Java will compile from Java code to Java bytecode and make a ,jar file.
The reason this idea wouldn’t work is that MCreator’s template generation is a lossy process and you unfortunately can’t just reverse a template and go back to a mod element file. Technically, compiling Java code into JVM bytecode in a .jar file is a lossy process, but it is mostly reversible with modern Java decompilers. With these limitations, we can’t reconstruct the original workspace from a ,jar.
A solution for this would be if we bundled the raw .mod.json files and the .mcreator file (which is an index of the .mod.json files and stores workspace properties) into the final jar. This would allow reversal, but it will likely not be done as some people want to keep workspaces secret, it would majorly increase the jar size, and most people wouldn’t have a use case for this.
