You can also use other model creator, but I think that Blockbench is the best free one because it's the most advanced, can be used to make both block and entity models, can be used to set the rendering of the item when inventory, hand, item frame... and much more. It also is very quick and intuitive.

You cannot make OBJ models in many of the Minecraft-specialized software yet. I would suggest Blender or something of the like if you want to mess with OBJ. Tabula is also a fantastic program for entity models if you need them.
