Is there any way to string text?

I'm Trying to make a class selector item for a modpack I'm making, and I want my item to run a command to give you magical powers. However, the command doesn't work with normal selectors. (@p @a @s @e) I want to make it have a username, but I am not sure how. Is this possible? If so, can someone tell me how to do it?
